Senator John Cornyn Recognized as a Teach For America Congressional Champion
San Antonio, February 3, 2016—This week, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) will be recognized as a Teach For America Congressional Champion for his continued efforts to expand educational opportunities for students in Texas and across the nation. Cornyn is one of 12 members of Congress to be honored in this way by Teach For America CEO Elisa Villanueva Beard and founder Wendy Kopp in this way.
“Our Congressional champions have played an instrumental role in growing Teach For America’s impact in our first 25 years. Their support for critical funding and key policy provisions has helped expand educational opportunity for children growing up in poverty across the country, and inspired thousands of individuals to join the fight for educational equity and excellence,” said Teach For America CEO Elisa Villanueva Beard. “I am thankful for leaders like Senator Cornyn who are committed to ensuring that all children in this nation have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.”
Cornyn was selected for his unwavering support of Teach For America in Texas and Washington, D.C. In particular, the recognition honors his efforts in championing quality alternative certification programs and demonstrating leadership in securing adequate funding for the Supporting Effective Educator Development (SEED) program that enables excellent teacher training and support.
“For the past 25 years, Teach for America has cultivated new leaders and expanded educational opportunities for students across the country. As a Texan, I’m especially proud TFA was founded by a Dallas-native and is now led by a Houstonian,” Cornyn said. “I’m honored by this recognition, and I look forward to continuing to support this innovative organization as it changes even more young lives for the better.”
Teach For America has been a community partner in Texas since 1991. This year, as Teach For America celebrates its 25th anniversary nationally, Teach For America in Texas is nearly 4,000 members strong.
